Is Your “Climate-Controlled” Car Storage Really Climate Controlled?

When you’re storing a collector car, exotic, classic, or any vehicle you care about, the term “climate controlled” should mean more than just a well-insulated building.

Take a look at the ceiling. Do you see a dedicated HVAC system? That’s what true climate control looks like.

Some storage facilities advertise themselves as climate controlled simply because their buildings are insulated. While insulation helps reduce temperature swings, it does not actively regulate temperature or humidity. Without an HVAC system, the interior temperature can still rise dramatically during the summer and drop significantly during the winter.

A true climate-controlled facility uses commercial HVAC equipment to maintain a consistent environment year-round. This helps protect your vehicle from excessive heat, cold, humidity, and condensation—all of which can contribute to issues such as corrosion, mold, mildew, deteriorating leather, cracked dashboards, and other long-term damage.

Before choosing a storage facility, don’t be afraid to ask questions:

• Is there a dedicated HVAC system?
• Is the temperature actively regulated throughout the year?
• Is humidity monitored or controlled?
• Can you see the HVAC equipment in the storage area?

If you’re paying for climate-controlled storage, you should receive the real thing—not simply an insulated building with a marketing label.
